Amano Shrimp Eggs

1 of my shrimp is carrying eggs.. has anyone had any success in hatching them? Is it just a case of adding some salt? Is it even worth the effort? I feel bad her carrying all these eggs and fanning them for them to die because she isn't in the right water conditions.

Any advice?

While its not something i've done it is something i've read a lot about as I wanted to try myself.

From what i've read the most successful way is to isolate the egg laden female into her own freshwater tank when she is ready to give birth (about 4 to 6 weeks from mating and the eggs becoming visible). When the babies have been born give them a day in the fresh water then transfer them over to an unfiltered tank of full marine water. Acclimatising them to salt water by slowing adding it to a bucket with them in over a few hours.

If you haven't got a Marine tank you can either buy all the bits like a hydrometer and salt and make your own or just buy pre-mixed salt water at an LFS.

While they grow you will need to feed them fry food and/or green water and small bits of algae tablets when they grow a bit.

At about 12 weeks it is time to start acclimatising them to fresh water again so start using fresh water for the weekly water change. At week 16 the biggest should look like small adults and are ready to be transfered to the same tank as the adults.

Its a lot of effort really which is why i've not bothered trying to breed them. You would probably end up with between 50 and 100 shrimp so could probably sell them for quite a few pennies but it does seem like quite a lot of effort!

If you do decide to give it a try i would read as much as possible from people who have been successful. To use a cliche: Failing to prepare is preparing to fail!

Ok that sounds fairly tricky, I don't really have time for it at the moment but perhaps over the summer if she gets eggs again I will give it a go. How do you know when the eggs are fertilized. I noticed in your pic they were whitish but my shrimps are green.

Amano eggs are greyish/brown when they first carry them, depending on the light in the tank they may look green, as they develop they grow almost see through, if the eggs are not fertile she would kick them off after a day or so.

Strangely, my Amano(s) had some orangey yellow eggs a couple of months ago. Don't know what caused it. She carried them for the full term I think.

They are absolutely minute!! You probably wouldn't notice them if they don't wiggle.

One of the pics in my sig shows how small new born CRS are, This guy was about a day old and had grown a little bit. its about 1mm long:

New Born Anamo are about 10 times smaller and i would never be able to photograph one with my camera. The colour of my Anamo eggs varys as well, currently one of them has very dark, almost black eggs.

I guess they vary in colour then as do adults. Here is a pic of some they are close to hatching the mother was shaking them so some of them were visable, they are visible when they hatch, just about though even the fish only notice and eat them when they wiggle.
