Hello, so I'm thinking about getting a 20 gallon tank sometime in April. I want to get about 10 White Cloud Mountain Minnows and I was wondering if they would be fine with amano shrimp? They seem to have the same requirements but I wanted to make sure they wouldn't harm each other.

Thanks for the help! :)

the fish will be fine with the shrimp.
should be fine in the tank.. just make sure you do a fishless cycle before hand.. i always find that shrimp do better and look nicer in a live planted tank.. and when adding the shrimp in do it after you have the fish in.. so wait a month to make sure everything is good when adding the fish in to then add the shrimp in.
you can also put any other shrimp you want, as long as it isn't like a cray fish you'll have no issues.

Thank you for your reply! :) I just want to clarify, your saying after I cycle the tank I add the minnows and then after another month I should add the shrimp?

yes, so after you cycle the tank, add 6 minnows. then wait 2 weeks so you can make sure that the water stats don't fluctuate or anything. then after that time you make sure the water is perfect add another 4 minnows to top off the numbers.
for shrimp you can keep 10 per gallon because the bio load is so small. but they breed so fast so i wouldn't fully stock them up. i would add around 6 (making sure you have lots of hiding spots and is densely planted.. or you won't see them much. and would get 6 different colour ones like fire red shrimp or something that will pop :)

One thing I like to tell people when they first start keeping shrimp, is to watch what you put in the tank.  Any meds, water treatments or ferts should be shrimp friendly or you'll have a shrimpocalypse.
A really cool shrimp I have always liked, is the Bamboo/Flower shrimp.  The get 2-3 inches big and are harmless.   They also have great color.  They do freak you out when they molt because the molt looks just like a dead bamboo shrimp lying on the bottom.

If you see a shrimp the same size as a bamboo shrimp but it is clear in color and called a whisker shrimp...run in the other direction.  These shrimp are a nightmare.  I bought 3 of them because the store told me they were good in a community tank...that wasn't the case.  They ate 2 of my green neon tetra's before they found a new home in my piranha tank.

If you get amano shrimps they won't breed. The females will carry eggs but the larvae need salt water as soon as they hatch so they won't survive in your tank. Other types of shrimp will breed, such as cherry shrimp.

Thanks for your reply :) How would I know if the meds or water treatment were ok for the shrimp? Also, the bamboo shrimp look really cool :)

Thanks for your comment :) I just looked up the cherry shrimp, they're so cute haha. I don't know if you would know this, but would the minnows/adult shrimp eat the baby shrimp? And would I need to do anything special for the babies?

I can state with absolute confidence that White Cloud Mountain  minnows will eat cherry shrimp, they will eat shrimplets and nip at and harass the adults. Shrimp especially any of the dwarf species of shrimp are at the bottom of the food chain and almost all fish will have a go at them.

I can see why BerryAttack would suggest to add the fish first and then the shrimp, mainly to ensure that the water is good and stable and that the filter bacteria are working properly. And the fact that shrimp need a stable established tank.
However I find that its better for the shrimp to have learnt all the hidey holes before any potential fish predators are added to the tank. Many a time I have seen newly released shrimp go into a tank of existing fish, only to have the fish attack and sometimes eat the shrimp before they have even made it to any sort of shelter.
Amano shrimp may fair better with MWCM's but I suspect that if they feel threatened or stressed by the fish at all they will spend the majority of their time hidden from view.

Hmm I see what you mean, I'll have to think about what I'm going to get and in what order I'll get them...you wouldn't happen to know of any other tank mates for WCMM would you? Also, thanks for your comment :)

The best way to tell if a chem is alright for shrimp is to research it online first.  Sorry I don't have better advice but it's always worked for me.

Thanks for letting me know :)

Ok sorry for the double post (correct me if I'm wrong but you can only edit a post once).

Anyways, I was looking up videos of different shrimp today and I can't get over how interesting and cute they are. So now I'm kind of more interested in the shrimp than the WCMM, are there any fish that definitely won't eat the shrimp and the baby shrimp? Or are there any shrimp that would be able to stand up to WCMMs? If I got the Minnows and they terrorized the shrimp I would feel horrible...so ya any help is appreciated :)

Wow I ask a lot of question, ok one more (for now xD) I just remembered that I have a 5 gallon tank from my betta that died last year (I miss that guy). Would this be ok for a planted, shrimp only tank? Also, this may be a dumb question but can you cycle a 5 gallon tank? Thanks again for all the help guys! :)
