I have recently bought two Apistogramma Cacatouides and they have settled down in the tank.

They are definately showing signs of breeding. The female has made a cave by digging all the sand out from under the bogwood in the middle and is constantly in ther and only comes out for food.
The male however is constantly patroling around the cave and staying within 10 - 15 cm of the cave.

Definately breeding signs to me??

Anyway back to the main point of the topic.

When ever I enter the room the male is straight to the front flaring his fins at me like I am a threat to him, his mate and his territory??

Also I was watching tv in bed the other night and looked up at the fish tank and no word of a lie he was swiming under the log looking in my direction. I sat up looked at him and he flared?

In my experience freshwater fish for me haven't been smart enough to understand the owner? Only when food is coming?

Now does this fish understand that I am the owner or does he consider me a threat??

Plus i was abit freaked out when he was just sat there looking at me? Reminded me of that episode of South Park where the stans insane goldfish was killing everyone lol.

Any answers as I am really interested?

no its not you.. plant the tank heavier.. ( cripes my internet is really slow tonight so i spose you ave your ansr) and thats the guys job... ( even if in reality they wake the woman up to tell them theres a "noise")

throw some plants in plastic or fake.. be prepared for them to be hacked at them for a few days..jobs a gud un ;)

you wont be a threat he is just protecting his territory when cichlids breed they become super territorial weather its inside or outside the tank when i was breeding my cockatoo's the male did the exact same thing about the plants its always a good option to have plants near the nesting areas as it gives them a sense of protection and cover but i wouldnt worry too much.

one last thing if they are breeding now then best not disturb the tank i would wait until the fry have hatched and been raised till they are a decent size.

i have a female angel that does the same, they spawn every week and a half or so and they are in the midst of the whole cleaning/courting episode at the moment and shes full of eggs, unless i feed her she faces up to me everytime i look at her =-)

The tank is densly planted around where the female chose to dig her cave. It just makes me laugh when i walk in the room and he sizes up to me.

I think that they have already dont the nasty and am just waiting to see the first little head pop out.

I think that they should be out around christmas. Wouldn't that be a nice little christmas present!

Lol

wish me luck.
