let me know if u have any more questions

Just one question, are you buying your F8s from a fresh or brackish water environment, most places just keep them in fresh. If you are buying them from a freshwater environment, then you need to bring the SG to 1.000 and slowly rise it to around 1.005 or whatever you see fit. If they do come from brackish water, then your set. I'm sure they would appreciate some java fern and other plants too. Oh, and you cycled the tank, right? Everything else seems perfect though.

What kind of salt did you use? And what did you use to measure the salinity?

That isn't necessary at all.

You just set up a drip acclimatisation from the tank into the bag once the fish is at home. Fig 8s can go from FW to 1.005 in about an hour with no problems.

My only question before I could make a recommendation is how long have the water stats been where they are now?

SLC

i would ask the same thing. puffers need REALLY REALLY mature tanks.

why? they arent hardy? a couple of guys at one of the local fish stores ive been to said that dwarfs, gsp, and figure eights would be ok in a 10-gallon (mind you they were talking about baby-sized) and that some are pretty hardy. contrasts a lot of what Ive been reading here.

no need to worry though...i cant say i trust what they had to say.

Only dwarfs would be suitable for a 10g tank, and puffers are very sensitive to nitrite, nitrate and ammonia readings.

you do not hvae to reduce your nitrates any further, nitrates at 10 are fine.

I think the biggest risk is that adding the puffer may cause an ammonia spike, depending on how much of a bio-load he represents compared to the rest of the tank's inhabitants. If he's a significant addition, you could see a significant increase in toxins.

Solution?

Start feeding the tank what you'd feed the puffer, every day, and commence water testing for NH3 and NO2-. If you see any spike, be thankful the fish isn't in the water. When the levels drop, you can add the fish without stressing the bio-filtration at all. Just remember to keep adding the food :)
