Relative newbie here, I need help determining if I'm overstocked. If I'm not I'd like some guidance as to how many more fish my tank may be able to handle and some suggestions for good tank mates. Currently I have a 29g tank with 1 dwarf flame gourami, 5 serpae tetras, 1 pictus cat, 1 male betta and 1 female betta.

I know this is a bit of an odd grouping but my bettas love the big tank and everyone seems to be getting along fine so I plan on leaving them in there until there is a problem.

Nah, you dont seem to be over stocked, altho i would take out the bettas. Also, maybe add 3-4 more serpeas

when you see a problem, it could be too late. i'd also take the bettas out and put them in a seperate tank. i've also heard males and females will kill each other if the female's not spawning and they don't get along so you may want to get each of them their own.

The generally rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon. So you can have about 29" of adult fish in your tank. Now of course, this is a bit of a generalization and does not mean you can stick a 10" goldfish in a 10G tank. But, I think you get my drift.
I would put the male betta in his own tank - as stated he can and probably will at some point kill the female.
1 flame gourami 3 inches
5 serpae tetras 2 inches x 5 10 inches
1 pictus 7 inches
Betta 2.5 inches
(Male betta should be moved)
That is about 22 inches +/- so you have room for a few more small fish - maybe add 2 more gouramies? Its up to you. Aside from the male and female betta, your stocking looks pretty good!

Thanks for all your help! I'll find a new home for my male betta. I actually had a striped raphael cat too but that only lasted for a matter of hours. Sometime overnight my pictus cat ate him despite them being close in size.

I was thinking of getting another serpae tetra or two as I've read that they do best in groups of 6 or more and possibly another gourami.

i'm glad you're finding the male betta a new home, they tend to come into conflict with gourami's also, and the gourami's often win. keep an eye on the female, she should be fine, but sometimes you get a feisty macho one ;)
