Around Thanksgiving 2003 I got a brainy idea...I decided I wanted to replace my 10 gallon tank that was running amuck with Mollies and goldfish with a pretty, cool and no work at all salt water tank. HA HA HA...that is a huge laugh. But I did set up my 10 gallon tank with Nemo (clownfish), Gill (4 stripe damsel), Dory (Blue Devil/damsel), Dom (Domino Damsel)...added a few pieces of rock, some crushed coral and salt..and waited.....then the water cleared and fish were fine..I added 2 goldclaw crabs, and then 2 Sexy shrimp...then I decided I wanted a bigger tank, so I went the whole way up to a 29 gallon tank with a pretty stand. I then got a porcupine puffer fish, he is the cutest thing! He ate my shrimp & left me only shells of my crabs. I forgave him, learned my lesson, and then bought 2 blue-legged hermit crabs, 6 turbo snails and a bubble strip. Aside from some icky light brown algae growing, I have had no other issues. I have been told by a few shop owners that I am rushing my tank, but when I tell them my only fatalities has been due to my puffer deciding his brine shrimp were just the appetizer on those days, they seem amazed. So I would like to know, i am I the only "crazy person with the best luck" or what?? I have read a few things here & there and decided I will not attempt the anemone thing and there are a few breeds I will stay away from. I really only want 1 or 2 other fish (yellow tang & blue moscallus angel) and then a few more pieces of rock/coral. I currently have two 2 pound pieces of rock and one piece of decent coral. I am using a sandman filter that does the job with a heating setting of about 76-78. All of my fish are about the size of a half dollar or so...not large, the puffer is about 2 inches in length...So am I nuts??? :kana:

Yes you are crazy with lots of luck... so far... dont push it :)

29 for sure is toooo small for Y-tang.
I have a 75 and the way my baby tang zips around that tank... I'm thinking it might be too small for when he gets big :(

I don't know about the angle.

29 gal really is a 20 when considering the amounts of fish.. I'd say you are full.
Remember, less is more!!!!
quality not quantity.

Pack in dolls on a shelf but not animals in a cage :)

Oh yes, you are really pushing it. :/ You have amazing luck ;) and while I wish it could continue I am pretty certain it will not. :dunno: Your puffer needs a lot of room to swim and will not be very happy as he continues to grow. They are notorius for getting sick and will get sick if he is at all stressed. I would do one of two things........get a bigger tank with more live rock and not get any more fish, OR.......take some of your fish back and hopefully get store credit to get more live rock, or use it to get frozen food or accessories. I wish I had that luck when I set up my first saltwater tank! :fun: Keep up the water changes to keep any fatalities from happening while you are making your decision or getting the funds built up to get the bigger tank. You may also want to talk to your LFS about a protien skimmer.............

Also.. you desperatly need to get some SW fish books, or do some research on line (some as in alot)... take the time to read about the species you have!

Fyi I used to have jeans with a 28 waist.. but that would absolutly kill me now.. your fish will grow... not as fast as FW in most cases... but they do grow...

.. ...

my waist........it seems to have disappeared.......and it was just about all I had goin' for me, until JLO's butt got famous anyway.........now that is really all I have going for me........... :/

know that this is off the point a little but that really tickled me!!!

The tang is a big no no, theyre hyper.

Damsels will often harass other fish including clowns especially in a small tank... apparently domino's are the worst.

"I did set up my 10 gallon tank with Nemo (clownfish), Gill (4 stripe damsel), Dory (Blue Devil/damsel), Dom (Domino Damsel)...added a few pieces of rock, some crushed coral and salt..and waited.....then the water cleared and fish were fine"

As in you cycled the tank with all the fish in there? Wow, your very lucky indeed.

Not specifically sure, but im guessing the puffer needs a bigger tank too.

Did a search on "blue moscallus angel" and didnt find anything.

Yeah youre pretty lucky. I'd plan on a bigger tank in the future though, as thanks to the fishkeeping gods o_O.

Well I do appreciate the info from all  and as you were posting i have been researching my species...I do plan on getting a 55 in April and then a friend is moving and she has this cool corner unit she had specially made and it is two 50 gallon units that fit together in a corner..i will be inheriting this within 6 months or so..so no my 29 gal is not & would never be the final home for my babies..and as for my hopes of a tang & angel, I had kind of put those on the shelf :byebye: until the new units are installed. I have not yet found an answer to a question about Puffy the porcupine puffer. ...he goes thru days when he is happy and playing then he kind of lays about for awhile..is he lonely or tired/stressed? any ideas? does he need a playmate? my other friends seem to be fine, except for the Blue devil, she does sometimes like to go after some of the other fish..now my clownfish is a little on the odd side, he was my first baby, when I open the hood to feed them, he comes to the top and sits there till I stick my finger in the water, he rubs it then goes about his dinner..any ideas?? :flex: is he looking for an anemone?? I have read that clownfish can live without them but the anemones can not live without a clown..is this right? Thanks again to all who took the time to put me in my place.. :*)

yeah I know that can't be the right name (some young buck at the fish store called him that) I have been looking for the correct name also..I do think the angel will get bigger than I am prepared for now..my dad's domino attacked some others, he has not yet done any damage here..but I do have a seperation tank prepared for any bad boys to be removed and or returned if needed..I do my water changes about 2-3 times a month with cured water..I have learned a bit so far..I have had my water tested by 3 other "professional" SW know it all's :p and everything comes back great, nitrates were a bit high, did a water change and back to normal..so any idea how much rock is enough with a 29 at this point? I promise on my fishy owners heart, no more fish till I get my bigger tanks..but I really do need a few more pieces of rock to give the damsels some more hiding spaces..

When you get the 100 gallon a tang is back in the picture.

For figi rock the general rule is 1.00-1.25 lbs per gallon. If the rock is more porous and a lighter type of rock then you need from .75 to 1 lbs per gallon, and if you get a more dense kind of rock the lbs per gallon goes up.

now see that is something I have been unable to find anywhere!
Ok so I have about 5-6 lbs of figi rock and a 1-2 lb piece of coral..
so I need a bit more huh? so how many times have you loved and lost a fish if any to become so knowledgable???
