Alternative Tank Stands?

Today, I heard an ominous creak under my 55 gallon (which weighs about 650 lbs), so I decided to look into other tank furniture. The creak may have been nothing, as I was leaning over the tank to get to a dead shrimp. Perhaps I just shifted the weight or something. Regardless, I was wondering if any of you have any ideas for inexpensive (yet sturdy) tank stands. Currently, I'm using a converted and gutted old stereo system. 

I've looked at a few stands on petsmart's website, but there aren't very many within my budget with good reviews.
 
Also, how do I know if a stand will support the full weight of my aquarium?

Are you any good at biulding one as i am sure that you can make one over the week end cheaper and better?.

I'm awful at drawing up plans, but I'm fairly good at using power tools. My dad is really handy as well, and he loves that I'm ("finally") getting into building things.
 
Of course, I have no idea of what sort of wood to get, how much, or how to draw up some plans, but I could always run over to the DIY section here.
