Welcome to the forum BigA.
I have no idea what particular thread you are looking for. There are tons of media discussions in the New Tank and the General Discussion areas of the forum. I have been a participant in several myself. It seems to me there are several right here in the DIY and equipment section too. In the most general terms, any material that is stable in water and has a high surface area compared to its volume is suitable for loading a canister type filter. I use pot scrubbers like these ones as my cheapest great functioning alternative.

I also have filters containing Matrix and others containing bioballs which are both moderate cost alternatives for my filters. Other media I use include sponges and even pond fountain filter media. I have 3 pond fountain filters and use all 3 in my tanks during the time the weather is too cold to keep the pond running. That way the media is ready to go when things warm up in the spring.
