i was wondering if anyone thinks this is ok or if they have done it before. i work in the plumbing dept of a local hardware store and i was going to use 5/8" tubing for my rena xp3 but i was wondering if anyone has used pvc instead? i was going to use 1/2" pvc which its ranking for PSI is very high. i was going to use a 3 inch piece of 5/8" tubing to convert the hose barb on the filter to a male adapter which has a 1/2" barb on one side and 1/2" pipe fittings on the other. i will thread on a 90* onto that piece to reverse it to go back and out the side of my desk. there it will hit a 90* going to each direction. it will run the length of the tank then go 90* back up the back of the tank. there i will convert it to the original pieces that come with the kit. i know this sounds confusing but i added a picture to show you what i mean. i hope people will leave input so i can learn more on this. i see the fish stores doing it and it seems liek it will hold more pressure unlike the vinal tubing.

Hi deliverance, sizing down from 5/8" to 1/2" will decrease water flow. Adding 90* elbows will also decrease water flow. Increasing the height that the water climb back into the tank will decrease the water flow. Consider all these factors when you design your plumbing. And consider that the flow rate per hour for your filtration should be at least 3 times the total volume of water. This would be for a lightly stocked fish tank.

i see what u mean about the 90* angles decreasing the water pressure. if i use 2 45* it will be less of a angle do u think that will be fine? the water climb will be the normal height of the original just in pvc. do u think i should just go with the vinal tubing instead or is it worth the extra time to go with pvc?

on the rena filters the nipples come out the opposite direction of where the hose needs to go. i guess i cna turn the filter around so it will be a straight shot. BTW where in northern Cali do u live?

I live about 25 minutes from San Francisco. Are you a San Francisco Bay Area resident too?
i live in antioch where do u live

i measured the 1/2" pvc at my work and is actually 5/8" on the inside if i dont make sharp corners like 90*(i can use 2 45*'s) i will test it to see how it works
