ok ive tried to convince my dad into getting a ro unit but it isn't happening so my thinking was:filter jugs aren't they designed to reduce hardness of water or am i wrong would this work from what ive seen it does would this work if not are there any other solutions to my water hardness problem

Jug filters are rubbish at removing hardness to be honest.
There are a few aquatic shops that sell RO water. The one near me sells it for 50p gallon/5 litres which I think is quite reasonable. You usually have to provide your own containers. You could then cut your tap water with RO water in the proportion that gives you the hardness you want to achieve.
