Was going out today, and noticed a tetra swimming weird in my 33g tank.. I'm going to breed my rainbow cichlids in there.. have just the female in there right now, with 3 buenos aires tetras... the tetras were lookin a little weird not swimming properly.. and the female rainbow had weird dark brown coloring all over her..

I felt the water and it had to be about 95' ..... VERY hot.. was surprised the fish were still alive... the heater was set on low, but was still on and raising the temperature.. I didn't think they'd last much longer, so I threw in a bunch of ice cubes, and chucked in a couple water bottles that were mostly filled with ice...

still didn't get the temp down enough, so i syphoned out about 25% of the water and replaced it with cold water.. I doubt the tetras will survive, but the rainbow seems to be doing alright. went right into the stream of cold water flowing into the tank and stayed close. Must have been feeling the heat!

I hope the female doesn't die... rainbows are hard to come by around here. Really wanted to breed them too

Hope all goes well, this a good reminder that we should all keep an eye on our thermometers and keep a spare heater as a backup.

happened in my tank. my lovely chocolate cichlid vlaad (signature ) died in the heat along with my stuningly coloured male nicaraguensis :( at least you didnt lose two of your most valued fish.
good luck though. i did the bottle thing ans water changes too. now they seem to be fine.

I think the tetras have permanent damage... they cant swim properly.. but hey they're still alive...

The rainbow cichlid looks alright.. I still haven't added another heater.. I guess I will have to do that tonight.
