Allenbatrachus Grunniens

Any sort of brackish will be fine. SG 1.010 is probably a good place to start. Yes, very hardy. Doesn't do much, so you don't need a big tank. Best kept alone -- very predatory. Needs live foods to begin with. River shrimp or equivalent ideal. Can be trained to take dead food in a similar way to marine lionfish. According to those who've kept them, they make *a lot* of noise. There's a nice topic on them, here. They're featured in the Aqualog book if you want a bit more. Potentially a beginner's fish, provided you do things "by the numbers" in terms of food, salinity, etc.

Cheers, Neale

What water conditions does this species need, and are they hardy, or suited to more experienced Fish keepers?

Thanks for your help, they seem much easier to keep than I imagined, I think I will get one of these Fish in the next couple of months, I'll start organising a tank, and all the equipment needed, I can get plenty of live River Shrimp, so feeding wouldnt be a problem.

If you are feeding live foods, make sure you gut load them first, ie feed the shrimp lots of veggies etc. If its wild caught food then quarantine the food so you dont pass on any bugs into your tank and fish

I fed mine via forceps.

He had to go back to the shop though, after he tried to eat every fish I have.

My fiancee has a juvenile one of these and only rarely makes any noise. Its only been on 3 occaisions when someone has put something like a bottle in front of his cave. I thought my friend was farting!!! But no it was the toadfish grunting.

I'm not planning on keeping anything in with it, except maybe Trumpet Snails.
