Thanks for the advice guys! Unfortunately this months pay check isn't going to stretch too much over £50 so the 1000ef might be the way to go. Another option is to get the tank set up and ready this month and keep my current 800lph filter which is designed into the hood of the UFO models until either next month or when I can shift my 'old' tank (I say old but I brought it brand new about 3 months ago). Would this option be alright for 2-3 weeks until I can afford the bigger filter?

Yes, that's what I'd suggest.

You can always transfer the media over in a couple of weeks/months/whenever you're ready, it won't make any difference to the bacteria which filter they're in :good:

Raptorex ..... Because in my opinion it helps sterilize water bourne & free floating pathogens, helps reduce algae growth & blooms but yes im quite capable of switching my aquarium lights on & off & control feeding thank you.
Im not suggesting that UV is NECESSARY however i prefer it and feel it helps keep my aquarium water clearer than without it.
Each to their own ......

Problem is that for UV to be affective the flow past the bulb must be low to increase exposure time. When combined in an external and not as a standalone unit this is impossible to achieve.

And I won't go into the details about the fact that it kills of beneficial bacteria types, etc. as well as the bad stuff as that's pretty obvious.

I agree, each to their own.
but should a choice not be backed by facts?

if a UV was to irradiate all, ok ALL, the water at the same time. I'm sure your thought might be, err more forcefull.

so you "like the idea", which is cool.
how about some backup for those feelings?

it cant "sterilize water born and free floating pathogens", though it can help keep them in check.
medication is the only way to do that.
so why not treat the problem, as opposed to masking it?

its a misery to me why you UV lot are so sensitive to suggestions your gear may not do what you think.
honestly. if turning off your light helps control algae. why use another light, to do the same thing?
you are using two lots of power, to fix a problem best fixed by using none, at all. (at its most basic)

i have nothing against you using one.
i do have a problem with people being conned into thinking it is something the need. or even with benefits.

even in a commercial setting. UV's do no more than control algae and keep down the bacterial load. that's keep down, not eradicate.
