We have had 4 feeder fish for the past 9 months living in our tank, that survived from when we had a pet turtle (he died about 8 months ago). They have always been completely fine and healthy. We got an algae eater from our local pet store a month and a half ago, everything was fine. Then, a week and a half ago we got a baby angel fish and a baby puffer fish (i think thats what he was) from a different pet store and within the past 4 days, all the fish have died. I saw them and they looked totally fine, then two hours later, one would be dead. They all had a sort of filmy looking quality to them whem i removed them, and i noticed with the last one that died, one of the feeder fish, he had a red area by his gills that looked like blood. I just dont understand, nothing has changed with the tank at all, except for adding these new fish. I've done some searches online about the store we bought the angel and puffer fish from, and apparently this store has a reputation for selling sick fish and the fish end up dying within a week or two frequently.

So, does anyone have any information at all? I just don't understand, they were all fine, and now they're all dead. And there were no other changes to the tank what-so-ever. Is it a disease that killed them all? What could it be? Sorry, I'm just sad about it and so is my son, so I just want to understand what went wrong. Any help at all is greatly appreciated, thank you!

What size is your tank and what were your Nitrate, Nitrite and Ammonia levels?

Would agree that tank size and dimensions would be helpful as well as water parameter readings.

A couple more questions may also help.

Have you recently added anything new to the tank apart from the new fish you added, like live plants or decor?

Water temp steady?

Changes to filter or perhaps you recently cleaned the filter and media?

Have you tested your tap water?

Symtoms of fish just before they die, gasping at surface of water? such as breathing rapidly, lethargy, unusual swimming etc?

The more information you can provide, the better, no such thing as too much information, too little will not help.

Do you happen to know what species of puffer fish it is/was?

when you introduced the new fish were you careful not to get water from the bag into your tank. the pet store could have had diseases in their water.

also when you introduced the new fish how did the rest behave. stressed? chasing the new ones?
