hello all, well hopefully soon i will be setting up my tank again, as i gave up fish keeping for a while due to GCSE's and other responsibilities. i have a 60L tank, about 60cm long, 30 wide and 30 tall. i have a fine white gravel substrate, its really fine almost like sand. im also requiring a new filter and would like to know what filter would be best for this size tank? nothing to expensive as money is a rarity for me haha.

i want to use live plants but only easy keeping plants and i dont want to have to go through the trouble of a C02 system, lighting isnt to strong so they need to be plants that can be looked after easily. please suggest plants i would be able to pick up from a pets at home of LFS or could acquire cheap online.

my planned stocking for this tank is:
6-7 corys( please suggest types due to size of tank)
2 khuli loach( will be coming from my mums small tank as i think a bigger tank with finner substrate will be good for them)
10+ lamp eyes
cherry shrimp

im planning on starting the tank of with the shrimp, to build a community of shrimp before adding any fish. is this to many fish for the tank!? i want the tank to be fairly well planted just dont know which plants would be best! suggestions for back, mid and foreground plants please. im going to find a nice piece of bog/drift wood as a centre piece, also some nice rocks to dot around aswell.

all suggestions welcome and if theres anything wrong with this set up then please let me know!

thanks to all!

I've a tank full of water, a heater and filter.

Just going from page to page, thinking what to do next haha

Check out Green Machine: http://www.thegreenmachineonline.com/ They have all the info and tips on plants you will ever need. Obviously Swords are nice easy plants that thrive in all conditions, and Java fern tied to your planed bogwood will always do well.

Oh, and of course shrimps love moss!

I don't think Java is very expensive. You should be able to pick up a loose plant for a couple of quid. Then cut it to individual leaves, as they will spread quicker like that. Either use shearing elastic or super glue to attach it to wood and rock. Similar deal with swords, split your plant and it will soon sprout new leaves, that way you will get more for your money

thanks, alot of help!ill try pick some up cheap when i start the tank up again! do you have any ideas of what type of filter i could use?

If you are working on a tight budget, you could always make a moving bed filter......all you need is an air pump, as everything else you can get for free.......even better if you link it to an under gravel up lift. Also the draw through the gravel will feed your plants. I know many people will say bad things about UG filters, but so long as you are not stocking fish that require high filtration then it will work well. One tip is to get a siphon tube that fits down the uplift pipe, and when you do water changes draw the water from there, and it will drag the muck from under the plates. Here is a nice link on how to make a Moving Bed Filter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1Wodw8n71Q

thank you but way to complicated for me! haha. im going to buy a small cheap filter, dont know where from but ill find one. i need help on stocking, i need to know whether this list is okay for a 55 - 60L tank:

1st idea) 6-7 corys, 10+ lamp eyes, cherry shrimp

2nd idea) 2 blue/golden rams(one male and one female), cherry shrimp, amano shrimp, 10+ lamp eyes

3rd idea) suggest a third idea!

Corys need very clean substrate, as they spend their time laying on the bottom. So you need to be sure you can take the time to keep the substrate clean?

How about Dwarf Kribensis Chiclids and Rainbowfish? You could get a pair of Kribs, and a male Rainbow with 3 or 4 females??? easy to keep and will very likely to breed.....shrimps are always good....I love them, and they are good at cleaning up

i can keep the substrate clean so that should be fine for the corys and well i like kribs but ive always loved blue/golden rams and always wanted a pair as they are stunning fish! and last time i was at my local P@H they had them cheap! so im thinking them and corys with shrimp, of not it will be a shoal of lapeyes as they are amazing :)

okay so been looking around at lots of other posts, and i think my final plans are a medium-heavily planted tank, with 2 pieces of wood and some nice rocks. im going to start it with 6-7 pygmy cories, as im going to set up a small 15L tank in my room as a cherry shrimp tank. then when i have lots of adult shrimp in the 15L i will transfer them to the 60L as that way they should be big enough not to be eaten haha! and istead of lampeyes or rams, im going to go with a shoal of 10-15 ember tetra(if i can locate any). i think this will look good as i like shoaling fish. or im thinking instead of cories i might go with 6-8 khulis? would this be ok?

im going to use a fluval U2 filter as ive heard good things about these and a 50W or 100W heater. i think this is it, does anything sound wrong with any of this?

feedback would be much appreciated on this!

thanks to all!

Just a note on the stocking. I would personally go with the pygmy cories instead of the kuhlis. I have 5 kuhlis and I don't see them very often (I am going to bump it to 10, I heard bigger numbers means seeing them more). But I love my cories. Very cute. Good luck. :good:
