Algarde Syphon Set

I bought an Algarde syphon set yesterday by mistake (cos I didn't read the box properly) and when I opened the box instead of a long funnel vacuum i simply found an end piece with a coarse plastic mesh over the end.

Can I still use this for cleaning my playsand substrate to just suck the poop and old food off the surface or will I need to return it and get a proper gravel cleaner?

it was rubbish mate. hardly worked. it took me ten minutes to syphon off 1 bucket of water from the tank. took it back and got a refund. gonna go for a tetra 50 gravel cleaner instead.
