Hi ive been keeping a brakish tank for about 2 months now but im having terrible trouble with algae. the tank is a 120l tank with a sand substrate well planted with brakish compatible plants and a nice mix of fish inc GSPs, finger monos, archers, chromides, rainbow celebes and glassfish. what can i do i have cleaned it out done a water change it just comes back with avengence.

any advice welcome.

Thanks

Lewis

Ps has anyone ever fed their GSPs prawn mine seemed to quite like the chunk i gave them (raw) wondered if this was suitable they have a varied diet other wise

Algea does seem to thrive in brackish tanks and other hard high mineral content set ups, i have awful trouble with algea in my brackish and Tanganykian set ups. Strong water movement over the substrate from a powerhead placed low in the tank seems to lessen the problem by constantly moving the surface grains of the substrate and running a magfloat over the front glass every day stops it from growing there but i still havent found an effective way to keep it off the rocks.
Keeping the lighting times down to a minimum of a few hours each evening when you are watching the tank greatly reduces the spread of algea and a UV steriliser on the return of a external filter also helps.

Did you know monos grow around dinner plate size?
You are going to need a much bigger tank for all those fish!

And yeah you can feed your gsps prawn (in shell is best).

i hadnt realised they get that big might need a bigger tank was planning on moving the celebes and glass fish out into their own tank as the GSPs are getting a bit bigger and faster

my s.g was 1005 last time i checked

mostly onion type plants and some java fern
