Hello,

Juat looking for a couple of suggestions on how best to control algae.

I've got a Juwel Rekord 60, at the moment it contains 4 Tiger Barbs and 4 Rosy Barbs, I am going to add a Denasoni Barb and maybe a Silver Shark.

The problem is I'm having difficulty controlling algae growth.

Not even a week after I did a water change and cleaned all the glass all the rocks are covered in green and brown algae and the glass is all green too.

I was thinking of getting an algae eater of some sort but not sure if it would be safe with Barbs so would it be better to use another method??

I've got some USD Catfish that I could move from the big tank or maybe an Otto or a Plec maybe?

Please let me know what you all think.

Bala sharks are a shoaling fish and need to be kept in groups, need a 90 gallons to 125 gallon tank.
Can we take a look at your stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
I have a rekord 60 and there filters are not that good, maybe want to add another filter to the tank, as I used to run two filters.
Barbs really need a bigger tank than 12 gallon.

Look under algae problems.

OK I didn't know that about the sharks.

The lady at the LFS said that Barbs would be OK in that tank as long as I keep the numbers low- is she telling me porkie pies? I must say she has always been very good, I've been going there for donkeys years.

I do really like the Barbs though and now I've got them I have to do something with them!

The only thing I could do is maybe a re-shuffle and swap some of the fish from my big tank into the Rekord 60 (or use it as an excuse to treat myself to the HUGE Rena Tank I've been eyeing up for months at the LFS!!)

In the big tank Ive got too many fish though:

1 Sailfin Plec
3 USD Catfish
2 Clown Loach (Only small)
1 RTBS
1 Flying Fox
4 Pearl Danio
8 Zebra Danio
4 Serpae Tetra
3 Glass Bloodfin
1 Female Green Swordtail
2 Male Green Swordtail
Quite a lot of Neons (they move too quick for me to count them!!)

I think that the RTBS and the Flying Fox should be OK but I think you will agree I'm a bit stuck as that's far too many to put into a 60l tank!!

Ta for the algae link too, I'll look at that now!

The livebearers could go into the rekord 60.
Barbs can be aggressive so need room for them to get away from one another.

By 'livebearers' do you just mean the swordies? I thought they were the only livebearers I have.

You see I was thinking that the only ones which would be safe with Barbs would be the RTBS, Plec, USD Catfish and Flying Fox but if I moved all the rest they would be ripped to shreds by the Barbs!

Leave it as it is then.
