Hi all,

I recently bought a 2nd hand tank from ebay and I started setting it up last night. I was cleaning in in the bathtub, and i noticed quite a bit of algae under the silicone. I got to work woith a toothbrush, but it didn't get rid of all of it. I have not filled it yet to see if it leaks, but supposing I do fill it up and it is not leaking, would the presence of algae under the silicone damage the seal over time? :dunno:

I don't want a living room fll of water in a couple of weeks!

Thanks!

Seeing as no-one seems to have the answer, I think I'll chance a guess. I'm thinking the algae won't be able to grow unless there's water and light in there and it may already be dead after so long being dry (was the tank dry?). I doubt it should cause any serious damage... but I realy don't know :p

Hi Sylvia,

Thanks for the response ;)

Yes the tank was dry, and the algae probably is dead, but is it a sign of a dodgy seal? I just don't want to fill it with water only to find out that algae under the silicone means that it will start leaking in a few weeks!

I suppose it could be... you may wan't to re-seal it or at least don't put any fish in just yet and see how it goes...

Yea, fill it w/ water and leave it for a week or something...
