Hi All,

My new 15g tank is cycling at the moment has been for over a week, i've got 10 Zebra danios in there at the moment. I have just had to treat them for a fungal infection using tetra fungistop and thats cleared up. Now i've noticed this algae type of thing on the tank glass, it's sorrt of white'ish grey'ish tranlucent in colour, it's round and it wipes of quite easily. Is this algae or something more sinister.

I've never come across this sorrt of thing before please help.

All of the danios are fine, swimming around like mad men.

Thanks in advance.

Steve.. :( :( :(

try and put as much as u can of equipment from the tank with algae on(but not heaters or filters or air pumps) and put it in bleach for 4 days then put it in water for 7 days. and clean all glass with sponge(clean) and on the heater and filter and airstone but put them back straight after. do this to all things in the tank. try it and come back and reply in a week or two.

just do it anyway to be sure that it wont spread. scrub the glass with a clean sponge to get rid of the algae on it do this every day. what ever u do DONT use any conditioners on it because it makes it worse.

If you read my initial post, you'll see that i'm not even sure that it is algae. Its description does not match any descriptions of algae that i have come across.

Could it be some type of parasite, if so I don't think just scrubbing it off everyday will actually help in the long run. It will however make the tank look a lot better, which would be nice, but i'd rather find out whats causing it and get rid of it for good. I have another tank that hardly ever gets algae, I don't know what, if anything, i'm doing wrong with this one. Also this tank is cycling, i was under the impression that algae would more thanlikely not appear while the tank was cycling.

Thanks.

Steve..........
:dunno: :-( :dunno:

Try not haveing the light on as much at will kep the algae down and is the tank in front of a window??

What are your current water parameters? That's quite a lot of danios to cycle a tank with. One of your readings may be super high and causing the algae. Post your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate (if you have any) readings. This might help figure out what's in your tank.

Hi There,

I've ran out of tester for ammonia, but mynitrite reading is about the 0.8 mark. Temp is around 26. The algae, as i've said before is only on the glass and is roundish, greyish, translucentish (is that a word?), and scrapes of very easily. I have plants in the tank, so the light is on approx 10-11 hours a day. The tank has been cycling for approx 2 weeks now. The algae began to appear after about 3-4 days, before I began treating for fungus (which has now cleared up). The danios are fine, they are chasing each other and generally look really happy. Please help, this does not match any descriptions of algae that I have come across.

Steve... :dunno:

or just change 20% of the water everyday to starve the algae. it happened to me. now its perfect. do this for a month. oh yes and dont forget to scrub it off the glass first.
