Have you ever noticed how some sponges have a kind of open-celled design and feel slightly "scratchy" even if they're not particularly coarse? Other sponges like the fake ones we use in the kitchen sometimes are completely soft. Well, the gentle but scratchy ones are what I find best for taking algae off plant leaves. Ideally of course you are already trying to remedy the cause, but this is just an additional thing you can do. You have to start out being overly gentle because its very, very easy to tear leaves and it varies a lot by species (and of course plants with many small leaves are basically impossible unless you are pathologically patient.) To do in one-handed you have to support the leaf with fingers below and use just move the sponge with your thumb back and forth in one spot at a time, ideally sometimes with a movement from the center of the leaf out to the margin of one side. Always do this right before a water change so that a maximum number of algae spores and cells will go out with the old water. Obviously also always clean all the inner glass regardless of whether it looks clear and remove and clean algae off all decoration objects if you can at the weekly water change, assuming again that its not too difficult an object.
