I have a nice rock in my tank but it has gotten black with what I assume is algae. What is a good way to clean it? I have tried brushing with a steel brush but this does no good. What type of liquid could I soak it in to clean it up?

Thanks,

Hey

If the algae isn't coming off even with a "wire brush" its sound like you have a little bit of a problem!

I have read that you can put the rocks in a bleach solution to kill off the algae (also removes the discoloration caused my myth blue) and then use mechanical methods to remove the excess after (i.e. more of the wire brush action)

What sort of rock are you using? The reason I ask is that some rocks can be porous and can soak up the bleach solution, making it a major problem to cleans the rocks before you put them back in the tank. IMHO I would avoid the use of chemicals and give the wire brush another go. Scrub harder!!!!!!

I regularly clean my rocks with milton baby seriliser solution when they get covered in algae .I just soak them in a bucket over night and then rinse well no scrubbing required. :D Have done this plenty of times with no problems .

If its really dark brown it could be diatons its really stubbon stuff, I just use the jetwash works every time you just get a bit wet.

I get this on my rocks, but my mbuna do a pretty good job of eating it.

Hey i have like hair growing from my rocks * slates * im wondering wts the best thing to get rid of this?
