Hi

I have just set up my mixed cichlid Rio 300 litre (67 gallon) tank. It has a load of ocean rock in it. My question is how to reduce the risk of algae build up, especially with regards to the ocean rock

Facts
1. There are no "official " algae eaters in the tank. The tank does hold some Mbuna, but not any Plecs or such fish.

2. The lighting is (6 month old tubes) 1x 38W Marine White and 1x 38W Marine Blue

3. I plan on keeping the lights on only for a few hours each day (possibly up to 4-5 hours per day)

4. I plan on a 40% water change every 7-days (if thats relevant, not sure )

Questions
1. I have not used Ocean rock before, is it just as liable to attract algae as the glass, or a bit more resistant?

2. Will having the lights on only 4-5 hours a day be (on its own) enough to prevent algae growing

3. Will my larger than average water changes help reduce algae?

4. I have heard that messing with the light routine helps prevent algae growth? If i had my lights on for x6 days weekkly (4-5 hours each day) and left my lights off all day x1 per week will this help (do anything useful) to stop algae, i mean will it makes sense to do this, apart from less light per week, does x1 day without light "interupt" significantly algae growth potential?

thanks

PS - i want my white / cream ocean rock to stay that colour

not 100% sure but im pretty sure mbuna fish like to eat alage over the day try posting this in the oldworld cichilds one.

thats a good point my friend, but i want my ocean rock to be clear of algae, i have foods that provide the mbuna with their vegetable requirements, although i am sure you are right in that they would like to nibble algae :good:
