I'm going to buy myself a new algae magnet - my one just isn't doing what I need it to!!

Anyone ever had a Magnavore?

Or would you recommend something else? I currently have a Kent extended (long arm) blade and a magfloat

That one looks like one I had for a FW tank and I thought it was terrible. I still think Magfloats are the best. JMO. SH

I've always found algae magnets to be a PITA to be honest, especially when cleaning the glass near the sandbed. The best thing I've ever used for cleaning both slime and even the tough calcifying type of green algae, is an old credit card / Phone top up card. Its sharp enough on the edges to remove all the gunk, but soft enough not to mark acyrlic or glass.

I'd have to say either get a manual one, like on a stick that you put in the tank, or the best magnetic cleaner is definately a magfloat. If you get something other than a magfloat, then make sure that it floats. I had one in a FW tank that didn't float, and it started to be a real pain.

I have several magfloats - but just wondered if there was something better out there?

Not sure if this will help, Seffie, but, I use the tetratec algae scraper, the one with blades, i find its easier to use, gets rid of all the hard algae and i can stop when i see the sand being trapped in it(unlike an algae magnet) to reduce scratches to the glass. :good:

and here i was scrubbing away at the stubborn green algae with a toothbrush for hours. Might try using the old credit card.

lol you'll scrub away the toothbrush before you scrub away that calcifying green algae! Give it a whirl and see how you get on.

thanks, will go take a look at them, sounds good :good: thanks Adam

Ak, have tried the credit card before and it does work on some of the algae but not the most stubburn bits (its my fault, should have done it every day duh!)
