I had an influx of algae in my tank. I got otto fish as they are soo cool, but also do an amazing job of cleaning! However, as is ALWAYS the case with these fish for me, they are dying off!

I used to keep them in my small 90L, but they would always die after a week or two. I got 10 in my 360L and now they are dying off agian - one a day just now :(

So, what can i do to keep my algae down? I can see it building up again! I think maybe reduce my lighting from 8 to six hours? I have CO2 in my aquarium which should help, but clearly not enough!

My only worry is keeping lights off for longer may not be enough for my plants?

Thanks!

Lots of discussion on algae issues in the planted section too :good:

Ok, i had some blue algae, but my nitrates are quite high. I also had a very high flow rate at the time which is strange! I dug it out as it was on the plants on the substrate at the front of my tank (as the description suggests it would be!). I hope it wont come back!

I guess the other sort of algae must be brown algae.... though i am not sure from the article. Its brown stuff on my rocks and glass. It went away thanks to the ottos, but now its coming back....

My filters get cleaned regularly, and my water is so good i now have discus trying to breed!!

My water never seems to be crystal clear which annoys me! And i wonder if it is just traces of algae on the glass!

I suddenly got loads so I am not having my light on so much now. It's off all day and on in the evening. Plus I got 2 Zebra Nerite snails to keep it clean

new tanks always suffer from the brown crap on rocks, you gotta ignore it for a few months and it will eventually go away. I have to give my plants leaves a wipe with finger and thumb from time to time. Been setup for 4 months now and its just starting to disappear.

buying fish to solve algae problems isnt really my cuppa tea, but i do have 2 x SAE's which are growing very fast!
