i've got this algae in my tank, i've read all these algae identification sites and i'm still confused
no photo as my new digital camera is rubbish heh

i thought it might be beard algae, but it doesnt sound quite right.

it only seems to grow on my bogwood. it's brown, fluffy and very slimey. my otos don't touch it.
it's a planted tank. only lightly planted at the moment, waiting for things to grow.

what is it?!

i also have a moss ball in another aquarium, i've had it about 4 months, and it seems to be unravelling! what can i do??

Well the algae on the bogwood could be some kind of mould, bog wood usually gets something growing on it, but not usually brown.

Moss balls are only in the sahpe they are because in the lake they come from the waves roll them into that shape. You need to frequently turn them over for them to maintain it.

the tank & contents are 6-7 months old now :S this stuff appeared about a month ago. should i get new bogwood?

If you can take the bogwood out and give it a good boil. Recommened to do this when first brought.

i soaked it for a week when i first got it in hot water. and now it has java fern rooted on it :(

As long as it's not spreading and it's not annoying you too much then I'd just live with it as it may clear up on it's own in time. A photo would really help if at all possible.
