What you have is BGA which, strictly speaking, is not a type of algae. It is bacterial, namely Cyanobacteria and is pretty foul smelling stuff. The main causes are anaerobic pockets in the substrate or very low nitrates.
1. Remove as much of it as you can.
2. Carry out a 50% water change.
3. Knock off the CO2.
4. Cover the tank with a blanket or the like so that absolutely no light gets in to the tank. Leave it like this for three days with absolutely no peaking.
5. Remove the blanket and carry out a 50% water change.
6. Reinstate CO2.
If you are worried about your fish, you could point the filter spray bar at the water`s surface during the blackout for aeration.
To avoid it`s return you will need to think about substrate maintenance.
