Whats the safest type of algae eatter.
I have 4 guppies, 3 zebra danios and 2 plattys in a 110litre tank. I would prefer a fish type rather then a shrimp or snail, but i will listen to advice.

thanks for your time and help in advance. :)

The best one I have is my Siamese Algae Eater but he has grown to be almost five inches long and is far too big for a 110 litre tank. Try some Otocinclus catfish, they stay relatively tiny and love algae; so much so in fact that you have to ensure there is algae for them to eat or they will starve.

I'm not sure on the tank size for Siamese Algae Eaters (SAE), I've had a pair in a 180L for 3 years already. The problem is, the SAE gets lazy looking for food very quickly, so needs to be really hungry (3 days + with no food) to revert back to cleaning your tank. Obviously you can't starve all your fish for 3 day stretches, so IMO SAE are good for very short periods of time when you are not feeding.....better to find out why you have algae and prevent it from the source. Again, no expert, but if you are like me, you might have your lights on too much. In the beginning I wanted to see my fish all day (I work from home), but that's too much light for algae, better to get it down to 6-7 hours, with an hour break in the middle. some websites suggest fish don't really care if it's night or day, though I know my nocturnal fish know when its lights out time and come looking for their nibbles!

SAE's grow big, are territorial if fewer than three, and prone to certain diseases (google FFHLE), they also have small swim bladders and prefer to rest on low lying leaves or bark where they can rest. Seeing as  you are in the UK, the hardest part will be getting true SAE's.....so many other fish look like them! I scan my closest 15 stores on a 3 month basis and have got only 1 SAE since december :( Even then the store didn't know them had him until I pointed him out :)

Other forum members will chime in here and advice on lighting....I only express my own opinions!

I have a 35 US gallon tall hex tank and my sole 5 inch  sae is doing just fine.   He doesnt seem stressed at all and will lay on the anubias leaves, swim about, or hang out on the glass.

In my 30 gallon long,  I have 3 otos and hardly ever see them anywhere in the tank.

Would anyone recommend snails or shrimp??
I had 4 yamato shrimp but they were a bit ugly.
any suggestions?

Also i have my light on for 9hours a day for my live plants

9 hours sounds way too long for lights, I have mine on for about 7 with an hour break in the middle, so 6 in all and have virtually zero algae.

Even though you said fish, I just got 4 Amano shrimp in my 30L and they cleaned the whole thing top to bottom in 2days, even the plants (which had a bit a hair algae on them) where cleaned. Great little things

They are much more interesting to watch then fish, They look like lawnmovers with 10 legs when they go along the gravel and its nice to have something other than fish in the tank.

Cut down on the amount of time you have your lights on, this will help with algae problems. What are your tank stats also, larger or more frequent water changes would also help. It is better to tackle and algae problem with maintenance rather than getting a fish to do it for you.
