Hi,

I was wondering if Three spotted Gouramis can be mixed with Algae Eaters? If so, which type of algae eaters would be the safest?

thanx

I keep a bristlnose plec in with my 3 spot gourami and its absolutely fine. Its not the prettiest of fish but it certainly earns its keep re algae
Ive never had a SAE so I cant comment on that and I dont want a CAE in case of problems up the line

well, its a 28 gallon hex. it may not be the best, but the fishes are doing fine! :D . I got four plants in there(pretty small plants), pot that is holding one plant and a vase full of marbles.(just to bring out the colors) ya..hope this works!

sry, forgot to add something..

Are there any other types of Algae Eaters that would be fine with my Gouarmis besides a bristlenose plec?? just wondering.

thanx

Otos and SAE (Siamese Algae Eaters) will do a job for you. Otos should be kept in groups of 3 or more and in a tank that has sufficiently matured.

You could also try Flying Foxes (very similar looking to SAE) but I understand they are not the best at munching Algae.

Avoid CAE though. Not only are they nasty buggers but they can grow to a foot in length and stop eating algae as they get older, concentrating instead on the slime coats of your other fish :X .

well, today, i went to my LFS and saw that they had Otos. They looked pretty cool, but very small. they where about an 1 1/3 inch and skinny. they seem small to me. I was was wondering if just one of them would fit well with my blue gouramis both about 2 inches to 2 1/2 inches? or would more Otos be better?if so, how many?
thanx in advance

I have a gold gourami in with 2 ottos and she doesn't bother them at all. She does chase my corys at feeding time, but I don't think this is common behavior from what others tell me. The ottos do a good job of cleaning and they are not so big as to be big waste producers like plecs can be. My 20g never has any algae now and I supplement them with tablets and veggies. I cannot see that mine have grown at all since I got them, but they are big enough to handle all the algae in the tank.

Put in no less than 3 otos, more if you can. They are out and about more I think with a larger group and they are happier. But then they will need a food suppliment.

Lucky 62 has discovered a flag fish from FLA that is reputed to be as efficient an algae eater as Siamese Algae Eaters. Some snails are good tank cleaners and well beloved by snail people. Malysian Trumpet is a candidate I believe. Check the snail forum.

One and a third inch is a good sized oto. It will get plumper, especially the females, but they have a steamlined body.

well, I purachased 3 Otos yesterday(sry, i forgot to tell you guys)and they seems to be doin very ver good.Just one more thing, what do Otos eat if there is no more Algae. I saw this place on the internet that fed them what looked like cucumber or zucchini. Which do you think it is?
Here it is

habve to scroll down a little bit, then you'll find it.

thanx for all the help everyone!
