Hi all
is it normal for an Algae Blenny to change colour. I bought this blenny this morning for the purpose of tackling my algae. got him in the tank and he hid up for a bit showing himself gradually, though staying on the LR. He has over the period of about 6 hours change colour from a sandy colour to the bluey red colour of the coralite algea which he's also picking at. Is this normal or am I in trouble.

Its a form of camoflage, they can go very dark to a light sandy colour.

I hope you have plenty of algae as this is all they eat and many sadly die of starvation after the algae is gone :/

Yer they do, plus they dont eat the green algea :S which sucks so the best thing to do is try and feed it pleco wafers or spuraline goods as a side food. Mine died of starvation  poor barry

That's interesting because when i was discussing a bit of a hair algae problem with a lfs - they recommended that blenny for it as snails and an urchin ' just wouldnt be enough'.

Sorry to hear about your barry starving - but that post may just have saved another from the same fate eh!

:look:

mj32, a varied clean-up crew will be adequate for consuming your algae. Astreas, Turbos, Nassarius, Cerith snails, Nerites, Hermits and Emerald crabs can all work. You might need to go online to order them if you cant find them on sale locally. Refer to SH's nano journal on page 4 for some pictures, or google their names.

Hi all
thanks for the replys, I do have plenty of green algae, which I was led to believe he would devour. but hes taken a liking to my coraline algae and polished off half a rock of coraline. Ill get suppliment food. as well.

What is a good green algae eater. Ive got the Blenny, an urchin and a few hermits at the moment.
