Albino Shark - Is This Normal?

About a month ago my albino shark totally disappeared from the tank and after checking the usual hidey places I gave up hope and put it down to him being eaten by one/some of the other fish in the tank - he was only small, about 2inches.

At the time I bought him I didn't know much about keeping sharks in a community tank and was ill-advised by the sales girl at the aquarium shop, who told me it was ok to keep an albino shark, a red tail shark and a rainbow shark all in the same tank. Yes, since then I've found out it's not a good idea at all and am in the process of setting up a new tank and will separate the two remaining sharks as the Rainbow is a real bully.

Anyway, back to the Albino... it's been a month since the Albino disappeared - so you can imagine my shock when feeding my fish on Sunday I suddenly saw this little head pop out from underneath a tank decoration to grab at a bloodworm! I dropped a few more bloodworms in that area and waited...sure enough out popped the head again to gulp another bloodworm!! And guess who it was - yes, the Albino!

But my joy at him being found alive was dampened when he briefly swam out from under the ornament to eat another bloodworm further away - he looked so anorexic!! His body was pencil thin, like a worm! Poor little chap. I feel so sorry for him. But I can't understand how he's managed to stay alive all these weeks. I mean, I spend literally hours sitting in front of my tank, observing all the behaviour, who's doing what etc and I have not seen any sign of him at all, not even at feeding time. So for him to suddenly appear back on the scene looking so skinny, I know he can't have been eating much all this time.

Anyway, after showing himself briefly for a few seconds he swam back under the ornament and I didn't see him again. Yesterday, curiosity got the better of me so I lifted up the decoration, expecting to see him under there. NOTHING! He's gone again! Vamoosh!

Is this normal behaviour for an Albino? Is it anything to do with tank lighting being on and sensitive to their eyes perhaps? I don't have the lights on continuously - just for half hour in the morning and then a few hours in the evening.

So now I'm back to square one again - wondering if he's been eaten or not!

Sorry this post is so long - I'm such a rambler!

dont you have an emergency tank that you can set him up in straight away??, he sounds starved,( due to the fact he is too scared/stressed to come out for food) or he may be ill with an internal parasite of course, but either way i would get him out of that tank as a matter of urgency, i dont know anything about albino sharks, but i think i would be very worried.about him, congrats on finding him... now you have to do it all over again :)
have you done water tests? and are the other fish ok??

He is hiding from the 2 larger sharks. They will be bullying him to death. Having 2 is a very very bad idea, having 3 is an even worse idea as the weakest will be bullied by the other 2, not just one. The only way this guy is going to survive now is to take him out of there. I would suggest moving one of the other 2 as well. Have u got any small tanks, or hospital tanks u can put the little fella in for now?

Hi - thanks for replying. Yes, that's what I was thinking I should do. Only problem is I don't have a spare tank set up at the moment - the newest one I have is not quite ready for stocking yet, especially not a frail albino. Don't think I should chance it. There is a guppy in there at present (I put him in as an emergency situation when I noticed he was constantly being harrassed by the Rainbow shark and my spawning Severums). He's doing absolutely fine but then Guppies are quite hardy. Not sure the Albino would be ok joining him in there yet.

The other, smaller, tank has my male Betta living in it - so no way could I put the poor Albino in there. That would be a death sentence for sure.

The only other thing I do have is this little plastic tank - about 8" long - which I used to temporarily house my Betta after he got attacked by the female.

At 8" it doesn't have a filter or thermostat - so I'm not sure that it's really ideal to put the Albino in, even if it's for just a week or two.

I'm thinking that if "Al" has survived this long in hiding, he'll probably be ok for another week or so and then (providing I can find him) I can move him into the new tank.

I don't have any problems with the large tank - fish are all healthy and fine, severums are spawning again and they only do that if water is right - I also have an aquarist who visits once a month to do full check-up/maintenance etc and he's coming this Saturday so if we can find little "Al" I might suggest he take him home if he has a suitable tank with friendly inmates.

So, from your comments, basically this behaviour is nothing to do with the species - it's because he felt bullied - is that right? Oh dear - I feel so guilty now. I will never again buy fish without doing some research on them first!!

im not 100% but i would say he is better off in the plastic tank with daily water changes than in that tank being murdered (( oh that sounds awful))
im sure someone will correct me fast if im wrong. dont blame yourself, i have done the same thing in the past ( bought a fish without the first idea) but plz as you say research in future it will save you a lot of heartache.and suffering to the fish
i would be very tempted to go with my heart and say get him out and leave him in peace in the little tank ( no lights etc), i def would not leave him in there and hope for the best

ps cant you borrow a heater or rush to get one today?

Hi - no I'm not able to buy a heater or anything else until Saturday (due to the hours I work and time I reach home, everything is closed) - but anyway, that little tank is too small for a heater - it's like a little box - about 8" x 4". I suppose I could do what you suggest and keep him in there until the aquarist comes on Saturday - but I'm just worried that the water will get too cold for the little guy.

Hey - just had an idea - what if I put the tiny tank inside the main tank? It has a lid with slotted holes at the top - not wide enough for him to get out or anything to get in. Do you think that would work as a temporary measure?

Putting the little tank inside ur big one sounds fine, it will serve as a little hospital for him. try an put something in it he can hide in tho as he may still get stressed from watching the bigger ones swim by or come up to it. Just a little piece of bogwood, a fake plant or 2 or some real plants. If thet doesnt work then he will definately be better off in the tank u think isnt quite ready for him, at least he has a chance in there.

Many thanks - I will give the "tank-inside-tank" idea a go tonight. Well - that's providing I can find him, of course!!

Will update tomorrow with any news of him.

Well, I managed to find Little Al last night, he was back under the central ornament again. But what a task it was trying to net the little guy. He definitely didn't want to get caught. Anyway, managed it eventually, after causing chaos in the tank and uprooting plants etc - put him in the mini hospital tank with some food and plants and then put that inside the large tank.

He doesn't seem too happy about it all. But at least I've been able to get a better look at him and can see that, despite his small size, he actually looks quite healthy and alert, swimming around fine etc. I just can't get over how small he is, though. It's almost as though he's shrunk in length as well as body mass. Very strange! He'd obviously learned to adapt to living in his "cave" all this time (the base of that ornament is about a foot wide and has a hollow underneath of about 2", so it's not like he was confined to a teeny space). He must have been afraid to come out because of the other two larger sharks in there bullying him.

Well, sadly I shall have to let Little Al go to a new home :( - my problem now is that I have two tanks (well three but the third is for my Betta) and 3 sharks, so someone has to go. I've grown quite fond of the Rainbow and Red Tail. Will move the Rainbow into the new tank so that there is just one shark in each tank. That leaves no tank for Little Al to live in, unfortunately. Awww, I hate having to part with any of my fish but I can't afford to set up yet another tank just yet.

Anyway, I'm just glad that he's alive and hopefully with some TLC he will start to grow!
