Okay…
Just to get this straight, If you have a Hang on back filter is it true that an air pump is not necessary?
I always thought you needed both.

You talking about the filter pumping out air at the same time as filtering the water?

Well, too be honest, a air pump can help too, because it would provide that extra oxygen that some fish need, however the filter/air pump action can be enough to satisfy the oxygen requirements of the fish, so if you want you can leave it at that and leave the air pump out of the action

;)

I have both - hang on back filter and an air pump running 3 air stones. I probably dont need the air stones, but I love the way it looks, and my fish seem to live being daredevils and swimming through it thinking they are something dangerous (they stop for a minute, then swim through real fast... picture Nemo and and the volcano of air bubbles in Finding Nemo). They also think the flow from my filter is a ride... the swim right up beside it, then jump in the current. Silly fish.
