Air Pumps: Constant Or Not?

Well in my fry tank i have an air powered sponge filter. I always have that on. In my main tank i have a bubble wall and and a bio media box - This one - My question is do i need to keep that on constantly? Im hearing stories that they dont last long when on all the time, but there not cheap. One was £20 + the other was £11.

not sure if this is what you mean but i run my filter 24/7 but i only have my air bubbles running on a night as the pump is loud
