Damn it's loud. I currently have it wrapped in filter wool and people from the next street are still complaining about the noise :blink:
 
What is the air pump used for if it is an air stone downgrade it to a smaller quieter air pump or maybe put some bubble wrap round it. it worked wonders for me lol.

I think so, fish need oxygen don't they?? I have reduced my stocking a lot recently but previously my fish would gasp a bit. I thought more oxygen was always a good thing. I was wrong???

The air bubbles provide a greater surface area for oxygen to be absorbed and CO2 released from the surface. You can create a similar effect by creating more surface area by dusturbing the surface, eg powerheads causing surface disturbance.
For those like me using CO2 we do the opposite! As little surface disruption as possible.
Wether you need the air stone would depend on what you were stocking to some degree.
