Guys and Gals,

I was just wondering whether or not you think that placing some kind of air freshener inside the hood is a good idea or not?

My tank doesn't stink but i do notice it when i walk in the room. It is not overpowering by any means and i am not worried that there is a problem but it bothers me that guests may notice it and think it is smelly!

I was thinking about putting some kind of air freshener inside the hood to help fragrance the air coming out of the vents. There would be no risk of it falling in.

Can anyone see any problem with this?

I would never try something like that, the chemicals will certainly get into the water being that close. If you like your fish I really wouldnt do that.

A healthy tank should not have much of an odor at all so no need to worry, you could always burn a candle in the the next room if you are truly worried when guests come over...

I have 3 tanks running and I don't smell anything from them. Are you just worried people will smell something or is it really a problem? Sounds strange to me, but I know every tank is different. If you keep up with cleaning and water changes you shouldn't have any problems like that.
I have an air freshener in my house but it's in a different room from the tank.

We dont even use aerosols in any of the rooms where our tanks are, I'm just too paranoid about chemicals getting into the water.

I burn candles in the same room. I've let of flea bombs in the same room. Used air freshner sprays.

I spray window cleaner directly onto the glass.

I've never had any problems at all.

But I wouldnt put an air freshner in the top of the tank. Put it next to the tank or something. But as said, it shouldnt smell that much anyway.

Generally if you can smell the tank water and it doesnt smell very very very lightly of peat then there is something wrong. The only time my water ever smelled was when the Nitrates were spiking.

How about you stop washing, and when your guests pop round they will just think its you that smells, thus not removing any glamour from your fish?

Any air freshener that contains chemicals poses a potential risk to your aquarium life.

I burn pure but aromatherapy oils (diluted in water), candles and incense sticks in the same rooms as my tanks but well away from the tanks themselves.

As said, if the smell is anything other than a slight earthy smell then I'd check your water parameters.
