I bought a Blue gourami to pair up with a heavy with eggs female I put him into the 18 inch x12 x 12 tank with her and no other fish, its lightly planted and I have a clay plant pot for her or him to hide in However he was so aggressive over two day that the female was in danger of being killed (I thought) so Ive put her back in the community tank. I have had success in the past with them and not seen this sort of aggression. any advice welcome

I think you will find you will need 3 females to a male with plenty of hiding places - that way the aggression is not too concerntrated!

If you want to breed them, make sure the male makes a bubblenest first before you introduce the female. Normally you can put the female at some distance from the male (by a division or something similar) and see how both react. If the male starts to build a bubble nest, it means he is ready to mate. You can then introduce the female and see how they get along.
