I have 3 mollies (should say had as of 10 minutes ago) - 1 black, 1 red, 1 sunburst.

The red is a female, while the black/sunburst are males. The black molly constantly chased the other two and nips at them. The sunburst has died as a result as of 10 minutes ago. My son will undoubtedly know that one of them is gone. I need to replace it. Do I get a 2d female or do I remove the black molly and get 2 more females so that all 3 are females in the tank? I am not interested in breeding - just need a peaceful tank for my 4 year old son. I've always had salt aquariums, so I am not too familiar with molly habits. Thought I'd known enough but apparently not.

Help!

They was fighting over domanice of the tank. you should with mollies have 2-3 females to every male as this is a common problem.

So don't nix the male black molly? He pecks at the female red as well, who because of stress is no longer red - more of an orange.

you can mix any colour molly but as long as it's female. This will reduce the stress.

sorry should have been clearer.

should I pull the black molly out and put only females in the tank? will that stop the problems. I'm concerned because the black molly annoys the female as well.

No Moose!! what we're saying, is get at least 4 more females.......
Got it! Thanks.

You should be able to keep the male in there if he has 2-3 females, as he'll try breeding with them all and just the one.

unless you want fry you will have to do something with the male.putting at least 2 females will make him happy but they will breed, alot.

this could be a pain but u could get another tank, say maybe 5gal, and put him in it and get 2 or 3 more females 4 the other tank. u coukd keep the male and not hav any breeding going on. costs $$$ tho. how big is ur current tank?

Just a 10 for my son. Figured if they bred, he'd be able to see the fry. Picked up a small 5 if it happened. Guess Ill pick up another female or 2 and see if that does that trick.

Thanks for all the responses. Appreciate it greatly.
