As some of you may have read, my filter packed up last night, so my girlfriend has been to buy another one.

I have just got home and realised that the spec for the new filter is for a 1 foot tank, whereas my tank it 2 foot.

She didn't realise this, and has already put it in.

Will it matter for a couple of weeks, just until pay day, or will all my beautiful fish die.

Please help.

It shouldn't be a problem at all - the filter's main job is to oxygenate your water by disrupting the surface, and clear the debris from it. The beneficial bacteria are mainly in your gravel, with a little bit in the filter. It is even possible to keep a planted tank with just an air-stone, and no filtration at all!

The only problem you are likely to find is that you have to clean the wretched thing out twice a week, which is a real pain. Rather than buying a completely new filter, it might be easier and cheaper to run a back-up sponge filter or box corner filter off an air-pump. You could get a two-way gang and also run an air-stone off the same air-pump if you liked. That's what I do in my 12 gallon (18") tank.
