Ageneiosus brevifilis/Guyana slopehead cat

That is one nice catfish you got there CFC

Ok, this is bizzare, today LadyM and I went to Amwell Aquatics just outside of Soham in Cambridgeshire. They have many unusual fish there including large snakeheads & adult L-numbers. (we bought a new puffer  )
And there in a tank with 4 TSN cats, we saw a fish that looks exactly like the one in CFC's photo and was labled as a "Gulper Catfish".. it was £30.

It couldn't be....could it?

No, I went there the other day and saw your new Congo Puffer. ;) From what I remember it was certainly a member of the Ompok genus, however, most of the time it did hide behind the piece of bogwood. :/

There are a lot of species in the gulper catfish family, Auchenipteridae; including at least 24 species of Aegeniosus. None are common in the hobby but they are slowly starting to appear in the more specialised shops as importers strive to bring in more and more exotic fish. It is highly possible that one or more of the wholesalers has now got a contact in the area where these fish are caught and are importing them for the aquatics trade. I dont think they will ever be popular due to their highly predatory nature and ability to swallow prey over half their size with ease, or in the case of some species like Asterophysus batrachus the ability to actually swallow prey larger than themselves but i am glad they may be starting to be a bit more available.
How big was the one they have? Mine was marked up at £69.95 for a 8" fish when i bought it 6 weeks ago so £30 is a very good price if it is the same fish, i would have snapped it up in a second. :)

Just amazing. He looks like a crazy shark, we have some little ones here (dogfish) that zoom around and are sooooo cool. What a neato fish.

There were two of them and they were about 6 inches.

Mainly fish in the form of frozen whitebait but it does eat the occasional mussel too. It can eat much larger food than the whitebait too as there was a 6"ish sprat or smelt in the last bag i bought which i tossed into the tank for a laugh and it swallowed that too!

!@#$
hes amazing!!

if you do finnaly get a chance to make a pair would you consider breeding?
