Hi everyone!

I just wanted to gloat. AGA's 2010 convention will be held in my neck of the woods this year, in sunny Ft. Lauderdale! Living in Miami, I'm very excited and will be attending. They will be announcing the AGA competition winners during the Convention banquet. Lots of neat stuff planned.

I don't normally link to other places, and I'm probably breaking a rule, but I'm ok with this. Just don't go joining their forum.

AGA Convention 2010

Believe it or not, this will be my first convention. Has anyone been to a Planted convention before?

Aquascaping contest, llj?

No, I'm not entered in AGA's aquascaping contest. I seem to have rotten timing for competitions, because I scape when I feel like it, not when there's a competition deadline looming. They will announce the AGA contest winners at the convention banquet. I'm stoked about it, I think it'll be a great experience. What really interests me is the tour of the aquatic nursery, and some of the classes. It's also 4 days where I don't have to deal with work. Hopefully, I'll pick up enough plants in the auction to setup my 8g.

Oh yes, for me it was great. As you know I'm a bit of a nut case for studying things that I think are curious, even if I'm not really involved in them (or at least I think Dave and Aaron have seen some of this) so what happened to me was that when I came back to the aquarium hobby a few years ago (after an absence of many years) and was busy discovering all the things that had changed or been learned during my absence (which is why I call myself a "re-beginner") I also ran across the whole planted tank phenomenon which had not existed in the old days. I was just stunned that it even existed. I had always loved the rare instances when I saw well planted tanks in the old days (they were few and far between and usually "jungle style.") So I had the seed of positive interest there for myself but still I just thought it was very surprising that there were people who actually had this interest and had taken it to the heights that I saw before me on the web. So I joined the AGA to begin getting the journals and to read the back issues on the archive disks and to learn all I could despite knowing I wouldn't be able to actually do a tank myself. When they announced the international meeting was going to be held in Atlanta I realized it might be a rare opportunity since the convention jumps around the world I think.

I checked in to the hotel and went to the welcome room as a complete and utter newbie not even really knowing that much about what a planted tank was. From there on it was history 'cause I lucked out and ended up making friends and having one of the best times I've had in years. (I promise to tell you about it if me meet up at this year's) The talks were great and our visit to the new Atlanta aquarium was fantastic and I even still have one beautiful anubia alive and well in my tank from the last day auction! If a complete plant idiot like me can have fun at this thing then imagine how many opportunities there will be for a pro like you! You'll meet all sorts of like-minded enthusiasts and maybe even some names (I got to talk with Amano, many of the people who write for AGA and other magazines and even the guy who has the Seachem company.)

Waterdrop, I am no pro. You are no nutcase. We haven't had a good question from you in a while, though. You've been too busy at the Newbie section.

I am even more enthusiastic about going after your description of last year's convention. If you do make it to this year's, we should definitely chat.

Hmmmm. I have far too many projects on the go at the mo. Chained to the house I'm afraid. Plus I live on the Giles. Its life threatening to step out of the front door (If you believe all the old reputations). lol

AC

we should do our own AC!

The lincoln aquatic plant society. :hey:

Good job we don't live in birmingham!

If I did one in Miami, it would be MAPS....

Indeed. I'll finish off with the TWickenham Aquatic Terrain Society

or maybe that doesn't mean anything to no UK  I'll get told off for that. lol

OK back to subject people.

AC

I'll let this bypass of the swear filter slide... Yeah, it means something in my side of the pond too.

Where is Waterdrop when I need him to get us back on topic?!
