my plan for the weekend is to divide my tank into a 25L and 80L using penn plex, and just wanted a bit of advice on restocking my frog section! the 80L part will house my current fish, so thats sorted, but as I'm now down to 2 frogs, possibly 1 (one of them has been missing for a week), I'm thinking my frog is a bit lonely!

Bearing in mind the filtration and heating is already handled by the rest of the tank, how many ADF's would you add to a 25L? i'll be adding small plants for them to hide in, and the floor will be white sand - but no rocks or logs for them to get trapped under!

finding much worthwhile info on frog-only stocking levels has been impossible, and the bits I have found seem to be confusing them with clawed frogs anyway lol :S

thanks :)

2 will be fine, i think :blush:

hi jacko - thanks for the reply! i've been thinking about this, and following the inch per gallon of fish rule, that would be 6 to start with (about 1" long each, 6 gallons = 25L), but iirc isnt the inch per gallon rule considered an underestimate?

does this rule apply to frogs too? they just seem to be happier in a group (or at least did, when I still had a group), but dont want to overstock!

We have three but a lot of bottom feeders so not enough room for more :) they are really nice to watch, they would usually stay under our wood and only come up for air but since we introduced more fish (Tetras) who are smaller than them they seem more sociable.
I know the feeling, i bought a puffer yesterday and since have'nt been able to do any revision he just distracts me and now i've got an exam tomorrow :{

the prob i had is they liked to hide, but one of them at least got trapped and didnt get to air in time, which is why im dividing the tank now! :)

good luck with the exam!!

I had 5 in a 30 litre tank, oohh i really want more now I've read this!

anyway, they seemed fine, I filled the tank with Hornwort, which they could hide in and also sit on. They seemed happy becasue they laid frogspawn.

You could try making 'caves' with a couple of cobbles and slate, or a terracotta pot, they could sit under these but still be able to get out easily :D

i quite liked the idea of a terracotta pot, but not sure whether it might spoil the view - so far it's an entirely planted aquarium with gravel and sand, but no ornaments etc. - they seem to like the plants too though, i've noticed they use the plants to stop themselves floating to the surface when they're full of air!!

made a mess of getting the stuff ready for the change - didnt order the divider material online until yesterday, so might just go out and buy some in the shops tomorrow - and the plastic box i'll be keeping the fish in leaks, but i've tried to fix it with aquarium sealant and will check it again tomorrow :S *fingers crossed*

got my new frogs, yey!!

got the tank emptied out on saturday afternoon, moved all the fish to a plastic storage box which they seemed pretty happy with (the betta seemed to love the funny shaped corners at the bottom by the wheels!). was a bit of a nightmare putting the penn plax divider stuff in - used aquarium proof sealant, but it was just awkward to get it to stay in the right place! wish I'd removed the glass shelves inside the tank now (they made putting this stuff in, and made adding an external filter more awkward too)

once it was all in, the sealant dried pretty quickly, so around lunchtime I started moving everything back (did around a 50% water change at the same time!), replanted everything and eventually got all the fish back in (and the one remaining frog - never did find the other missing one :()

went out and bought my new frogs this afternoon - was going to get 5, but they only had 6 left so I couldn't leave one behind! few hours later and they've all settled in nicely - need to sort out the aquarium lid so they dont hop out! they're a much darker colour than the frog I already had so I can still identify my first one (they also look a bit thin, but they've probably been a bit underfed at the LFS). one of them is absolutely tiny - cant be more than a few weeks or months old! will get some photos of them soon
