are they different types

There are loads of different kinds why not read the pinned topics in th AFRICAN CICHLID SECTION and look through the frequently asked questions

I don't know much about chiclids, but I know they tend to get territorial, and will grow much bigger than you see them in the pet store. For most varieties, only a couple adults might fit into a 40 gallon. Like that other person said, take a look at the chiclid section and the fish index on this site.

You might try posting in the african cichlid section, you'd probably get more responses. There are many many different types of african cichlids, I can think of at lease 3 species that are blue. Bright orange may have been red zebras (maylandia estherae), but w/o photos or more descriptors there is no way to tell you what they were. Also, the number you put in the tank isn't nearly as important as compatability. Did you see them in a mixed african tank, or individual ones? If they are in a mixed tank, it's very likely that many of them are hybrids. Try going back to you lfs and write down the names of the fish you like, and then post in the african cichlids sections, I'm sure everyone there can point you in the right direction.

smmetz i dont mean to be mean, but if you dont know much about them then dont post, i know people on here like to help but, saying somthing like you might be able to fit a couple of adults in a 40G is way way off, if you just post what you know it helps rather than what you dont know...sorry im having a bad day im not taking it out on you :look:

BOD - so how many can you fit in there

it just said
assorted african chiclid
did not say anything about types

Sam was it PAH where you saw the fish? Not the best place to buy fish from. Never buy a fish listed as assorted cichlid as it could be anything. Many cichlids are not suitable to live together so you need to research lots. Have a look on google for fish you like then you can see if they are suitable for your tank and see what other fish can be kept with them. Once you come up with a few fish names you can ask in the cichlid forum about specific fish.

Emma :)

what does PAH mean

how about if i get some pics of the fish
coz they look really cool so bright & stunning

PAH = pets at home

They know nothing about fish so don't ask them for any advice. I asked the other day about the price of some keyhole cichlids then i had to show them which ones were keyholes.

If you can get some pics then people in the cichlid section can tell you what they are and youll be able to research them from there.

samxx jus how many tanks do you have? lol

seems your getting a new fish everyday.

neway, as has been sed. if your going with malawis then you really need to do some reading.

they like totally different conditions to most community fish and there is hundreds of different types to choose from.

go to the african cichlid forum and read the pinned post, thats a good start.

when your ready for fish then its best to go find out what is available to you and choosing from that.

alot of people build up a stock list and then find out they cant get hold of any of the fish they want.

oh and as for how many you could get in a 50G. aslong as you have a stupid amount of caves (atleast one per fish) then id say about 14, 15 yea.

samxx jus how many tanks do you have? lol

the other 3 tanks have stunning cretures in

what is it harder to keep

oh and as for how many you could get in a 50G. aslong as you have a stupid amount of caves (atleast one per fish) then id say about 14, 15 yea.

oh wow

PAH = pets at home

oh right i get it

i seen them in wydale garden center :)

well you seem to be asking about different fish everyday.

its not harder to keep no, aslong as you set your tank up properly neway.

they like a higher PH than other fish (around 8.0ph) so you should use things that help with that in your tank.

in my malawi tank i have crushed coral for the substrate and limestone for my rockscaping.

both help to raise the ph naturally and save me from adding any chemicals which we all kno should be avoided if possible.

another thing is they are aggressive lil fish.

thats why you can have a high stocking level, its so that one fish doesnt get bullied on its own. if theres loads of fish in there then the dominant fish dont kno who to chase and so dnt pick on and stress out jus one fish.

you really need to have a few days reading as has been said.

i took nearly a month before i actually got my fish.
