Hello all.

OK. We are mostly into reptiles. I own 3 chams. 2 geckos. 2 scorpions etc.

I have always wanted a fish tank. So we started easy and small. I bought a top fin led 5.5 gallon tank. I bought substrate and rinsed it. got two small live plants. decorations. water conditioner. also the bacteria balls (i think that is what they are called.

got a guppy, two bottom dwellers and 3 what i think are called glo fish (really small, long, thin and they have a blue neon light on them). well the dwellers and the 3 glo ones died. only the guppy is alive. Not sure what happened?

what freshwater fish can i put in there with the guppy?

thx

With the size tank you have the guppy will get to big. We need to need your ph, and gh you might be able to find this on your local water providers website page. We need this because different species have evolved to live in waters with different water chemistry.(putting a hard water fish in soft water is going to shorten its life and vis versa)Also did you cycle your tank? If not this is what most likely killed your fish. It has probably already started a fish in tank cycle.

I agree with @PhantomCarp. If you have not read up on how to cycle your tank, do so here.

“GlowFish” don’t have a long life, as either them or their parents were injected/modified with “glow stuff”.

What kind of bottom dwellers do you have? Like @PhantomCarp said, the guppy will get to big for a 5.5 gallon. The only fish I would recommend for a 5.5 gallon is a Betta, snails, or shrimp.
Also, welcome to TFF :hi:
I agree. I recommend getting a 20g long, that is a good size for guppies.

thank you. wow. i just read cycling. whew. i will go test the water at petco and get the required testing kits.

not sure the names of the bottom dwellers but they did not make it either. what do yall recommend for bottom dwellers? i have a lot to learn. thx

Take a picture and we can identify it for you :)

cycling isn't as hard as it sounds. It just requires some time. A 5.5 gallon tank could house a betta, or some of the microrasbora species. Most people would enjoy a betta more.

For bottom feeders, you could get one or two Hara jerdoni (known as Asian stone catfish or anchor catfish). Those are about the only bottom dwelling fish I know of that would be happy and healthy in a 5gallon. They do prefer a sand substrate, with some dried pieces of oak or almond leaves to hide under. Or, as has been mentioned, get a few shrimp. A 5.5 can hold several amono shrimp or a colony of red cherry shrimp, which are smaller.
