I have an 85 gallon tank with sand substrate and a large bioload. I ran a worn out impeller too long in my Rena XP4 and now there is a small hole in the housing area for the impeller which has caused my filter to leak water where the power cord goes into the unit. Do I have to replace the entire top motor unit or is there a cheaper alternative? Any way to patch it???

Thanks. My first post. How'd I do?

ever see that putty they sell on tv to use on almost anything?... I've never tried it but they show you can repair leaky pipes by just pushing some of the product on.

Maybe trying the plumbing department at the hardware store might have a product that seals water leaks..

best of luck..

Not a bad first post :good:.

Can you take a picture so we have some idea what your talking about? I would suggest just using aquarium silicone, or using silicone to put a peice of plastic over it...but without seeing what your talking about I'd hate to recommend something that could leak or break it further.

You are not going to be able to repair damage in the impeller well itself  Any repair will not sit flush at the correct diameter to the plastic in the well, so the repair will lead to cavitation and constant premature impeller failures  Unfortunately, if the well itself is bust, it is a new motorhead job, something that worked out more expencive than a new filter last time I looked

If you did botch a repair, it would have to be done with Miliput or similar epoxy. Silicone does not stick well to plastic, and would leak if used for the repar, as it is under pressure in the impeller well

All the best
