My father got a more busy job, so he gave me his 36 gallon tank with a pleco. The tank is cycled, heated and the pleco is of a smaller species so have no fear. I want to add another fish in it. I like keeping single fish, i dont like shoalers. i also like fish with alot of personality, and larger fish (preferably one that wont eat the pleco), it must be freshwater.

Im always up for a challenge, so a harder to care for fish is alright by me, but keep in mind i am also fairly new to fish keeping.

If you have any suggestions, shoot. :good:

That's a tough one. Any larger fish that I could recommend to you wouldn't be appropriate for a 30 gallon. IMO, a tank of that size is really meant for smaller fish (2.5 inches and less). How about a male and female blue ram?

A pair of Bolivian Rams will fit in quite well. :D Less temperamental than German Blue Rams and require a cooler temperature.

The thing with a 30 gallon tank is that smaller fish are needed, and with this usually comes skittish behaviour so singletons may hide, and potentially damage themselves in the process of getting out of the way so to speak.

You could have a pair of Bolivian Rams then pick a shoaling species which will give the centre piece fish more confidence and generally make them feel safer. Offer up plenty of hidey holes made from rocks, slate and wood and this will further increase their confidence and happiness. Plants, again, will add to this too.

A Betta is a good option too, but again, it would be a very bare tank with no shoalers etc.

Could you post the dimensions of the tank (lenght x width x height) please, OP?
