Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I currently have a male betta in a 23 litre tank with some guppies. Yesterday I was offered a female betta from my friend as the tank she currently has it in also has quite a fiesty Angel Fish in that tends to pick on the female betta.
I want to have her to save her from being taken back to the shop, as for a female she is absoloutely gorgeous, she is purpley red, with a sliver body and would really compliment my male betta who is a purpley blue colour.
However, I am slightly reluctant incase my male (who is the dominant fish in my tank) fights with her, or visa versa.
I know you cant say for definate what will happen as it is down to the temprement of the fish, but I just wanted some advice as to wether I should go ahead and have her?
Thanks, Amy.

no, dont do it. It'll probably be carnage in your tank, maybe not at first but eventually.

For reasons out of my control, I onced housed a male and female betta together in a well planted community 65litre tank. All was fine for a few weeks until I turn the light on one morning to find the male hiding from the female with most of his tale missing. She would constantly chase him whenever she spotted him. The aggression is normally the other way round but he was a gentle boy. I
ve still got him, going strong with the longest tail ive ever seen on a betta.

My advice, its not worth the hassle. Hope that helps.

James

Yup, don't do it. If the female betta is not ready to spawn, the male betta will have her!

Do you have a breeding net or trap? Something to house her on a temp basis, until you get another home for her?

I don't have her myself at the moment, she is still with my friend. She has got a breeding trap, but it is currently housing ANOTHER betta! A male that keeps getting attacked by another of her angels in a tank. I think when I let her know I wont be ahving her she will give her to her LFS.
It's a shame, I really like her aswell, like I said, lovely colours considering the females (in my opinion) are quite dull =\
Thanks, Amy.

Your mate should have done her research before getting her fish.

It's a very well known fact that Angels and Bettas should never be mixed :good: your mate will need to rehome her bettas or her angels or get a new tanks. Given time, the Angel will either kill the male betta or vice versa. Bettas attack the gills of other fish, basically ripping them apart and the victim fish will eventually drown to death.

Oh nooo =[ I think she is intending to get rid of all of her betta's as her Angels are quite old and she is more attached to them, wheras she hasnt had the bettas too long (as far as I know).
I wish bettas didnt have to fight with eac other! I would love a tank with lots of bettas =]
Amy.

You can have 6 or more females in one tank

Female bettas can live together, males can't (if you keep that as the rule of thumb, you can't go wrong).

Or you could get a 10 gallon (40ltr) tank, make a divider and put one male on one side and have a few females on the other side.
