Advice Needed

I have just purchased some java moss, java fern and some hornwort. Will I be better off using gravel or sand for these plants???
The tank currently has coloured gravel but I will be changing it to a dark gravel or sand. Not sure yet.
I`m open to suggestions on which way to go.
If sand is the way to go, which sand is recommended?
The fish that are in the tank are guppies and mollies if that makes any difference.

Java fern needs to be tied to something not put in the gravel/sand

Java moss would be good tied to something like a log or a mesh or a stone
