You should clean your filter media once a week in clean tap water. Replace 10% of the water per week with clean tap water (no mention of conditioner)
You should replace the media every month, always remembering to dose with brand name bacteria (£££) to maintain a healthy population.

Pretty much every tank or filter, or filter media you will ever buy has this sort of info on the packaging. It's a money maker aimed at newcomers who haven't bothered to research properly and cycle their filter - which as we know should not need media replacement unless the stuff you have is dropping to bits , and should never ever be washed under a tap.
