I stocked with some of my first fish yesterday - 3 Platys (male) and 2 Honey Gourmis (Female - we think). My tank is 60L, fully cycled and has I suppose about 10-15 plants in it.

I've tested my water twice since I added them and both Ammonia and Nitrite are clear as a bell, temp is 24 degrees and my PH has dropped ever so slightly since it was new water this time yesterday (was 7.5 now about 7.3) but that I put down to the bogwood. Obviously I'll be keeping a special eye on that though.

My question is really about my Platys because my Gouramis I think are fine (for now anyway): -

They don't seem exactly what I'd call "healthy". The 2 Mickeys I can't really describe any definite symptoms, they're just a bit "sad" looking. I'd say one of them is a bit fat but that's it. They do seem to like to hanging near the top too but not ALL the time.....eg I'm looking now and they're not. But the red one didn't want any food last night (the others gobbled it) and had some whiteish poo just now so that's promoted me to ask you all what you think........do you think that it could all just be the stress of moving and they're just settling in or do you think they have (or the red one at least) some sort of parasite that needs treating? Or maybe they've just had a bit of a rubbish diet and need some good veg or somthing?

What I'm saying is do I wait a few days and see what happens or shall I order some medication now?

All opinions very welcome!

Hiya

I floated them in the tank and added tank water every 10 mins for an hour before I netted them in.

Yeah they're all eating now. They just seem to lack energy a bit, especially the Platys. But I dunno, is that how they are?

Is white poo always a sign of illness or could it just be stress from being moved/a previously bad diet?

I've only seen one of them go so far! One of the Gouramis did have too last night.

It's not all white, just bits of it are.

I dunno, I havn't looked that hard. Will do when I get home.

I found some stuff, it says it protects against parasites in a new tank or when adding new fish. Worth a try or no?

Whrn you say stringy you mean really thin?

The red Platy's poo had a pinky tone to the white before.

I have been reading up on all the symptoms. They seem to have some but not all of the parasite symptoms and maybe some of the bacterial ones. I'm just not sure. Is there anything I can buy that's just a general treatment that will help them?

This is really difficult to know if I'm doing the right thing either way.

The fish have an unknown illness probably a parasite or bacteria. I know becuase I have had these instances before.
Either methylene blue or a general tonic would help them. This kills most of the bacteria, parasite, fungus etc in you're fish tank. Try to find some as they are really good for treating fish that have an unknown illness or when the just look "off-colour". It also is used as a preventitive measure when adding new fish or monthly to lower the risks of infections. Just be weary of methylene blue it gives your water a slighly blueish tint and slightly damages the silicon of your fish tank though it has been used for decades and decades. The liquisil general tonic has hardly any side affects though just deal with the side affects as it will save your fish.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!

I've ordered the Liquisil. I hope they're alright 'till then.

Mind you, they won't be anyway if the keep eating all the plants!

Smaller Gourami is just hanging near the top behind the filter now :( . Other one was chasing her earlier, I dunno if that's relevant.

Supposedly they're both female.

Hi

Can someone tell me what "flashing" is? and can it be another symptom of all this?

I added some Gourami to my tank just over a week ago and they hid and hung around the top alot for the 1st couple of days. Once they settled in, they started to swim about alot more. Unfortunately i had to take them back to the lfs as the attacked and killed some of my other fish (the lfs got them mixed up and gave me a couple of boys)

I then decided to play safe and get some more mollies and some mickey mouse platies on Sunday. They also were very quiet and stayed hidden alot but today they are happy and swimming all round the tank! I think it just takes a few days for them to settle in.

I dont know anything about the white poo though so will let someone else advise on that bit!! :)

Good luck hun

Hiya

Thanks! They do seem a bit livlier today. The Platys all seem to pick on each other randomly so I think they're just deciding who's boss (I dunno why, it's SO the yellow one!)LOl! It's just all the random other things like the white poo and also some of them have slighly red gills (though the black and white Mickey only does as much as the online photo I found). I've given them some medicine now though so fingers crossed. I haven't seen the Gouramis chasing today yet so I pray that's it for them.

The white poo is strange, I can't seem to find out exactly what it's a symptom/sign of. Like if it's something specific or if it's a general illness thing (like looking pale in humans).

So Flashing......anyone know?
