Advice For 3 Gallon Tank

I think you could happily plant that tank up for some small shrimp, amano, crystals tiger, bumblebee etc...all is not lost for the tank, it will require daily maintenance, much more than a larger tank, i would suggest a decent hang on filter, and a minimum of 25% water changes daily using a water conditioner + tests etc, I have 6 cherry red shrimp doing very well in a 4l tank, have a look at my nano in my sig, I have just added a picture of one of the shrimp, (should have a few more fairly soon by the looks of things) and they seem fairly easy to breed, which is a imo a fascinating part of the hobby.

Good luck

i wouldnt subject a betta to that tank, its too small IMO, needs atleast 5gallons.
a shrimp tank however would be better, plenty of intresting shrimps out there.

Thanks for the ideas guys...

It really depends what you can get- pygmy sunfish, specifically http://filaman.ifm-geomar.de/Summary/Speci...ary.php?id=3364

are interesting, 'different' and thrive in a small species tank. Thereoretically any LFS should be able to get you some if you ask, they're one of those things that aren't exactly rare, just not in demand. A trio would work (1m, 2fm).

Equally, a group of microrasboras would work, but again, they aren't always available (although they have grown in popularity recently).

The pygmy sunfish does sound quite well suited to a small tank, although some of the articles seemed to mention that they only eat live food. So it looks like I will need to do some more reading.
The microrasboras sound and look great. I will start asking around about them. Does anyone else out there know much about availability in Australia.

I must admint that I had fully discounted the idea of going with shrimp without really looking into them. Having a look at your planted tank was really quite inspiring.
It looks like I have got alot more research to do. So much to learn :S
Still its a good distraction from having to work on my thesis.

Hrm, Australian... That's a bit of a pain, most fish are banned... Having a look at the legal fish list (http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=186537&hl=australia), it seems you're fine with microrasboras but not with the sunfish, unless they're native or there's a similar native equivalent. There's a few other potentails on there, but *most* on the list fall into the medium/large fish category.

Yeah it sure is. I was talking to someone at the LFS yesterday and she pretty said the same as yourself. Apparently Australia has very restrictive regulations on what fish are allowed here. Ironic considering the majority of our serious pests were introduced by the government.
